A HISTORIC OVERVIEW:
ACTCM'S CAMPAIGN ACHIEVEMENTS
Overview
In response to the wild tiger population taking a perilous turn downward in the last two decades, conservation and TCM leaders together responded to the crisis by choosing 1998, the Chinese Year of the Tiger, to be their motivator to enact the change necessary to effectively stabilize and recover
wild tiger populations. A dialogue between conservation leaders and TCM leaders opened, and legislative and grassroots efforts were undertaken to address the impending extinction of the tiger. If you are interested in attending an upcoming symposium, click here.
1997
Research
The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) commissioned the first nation-wide survey of Chinese-American users of TCM focusing on this topic. The survey generated the answers needed to assemble a plan in which a culturally sensitive yet effective initiative could be launched. Results from the survey indicated that TCM users are generally interested in protecting endangered species, feel persecuted by the suggestion that TCM is the main threat to tigers and other endangered species, express some willingness to avoid or decrease use of medicines made from endangered species, but do not necessarily know what ingredients are contained in the medicines they take.
